Breeds – Course Summary

This course provides essential knowledge for anyone involved in the care of domestic animals, focusing on the importance of understanding physical and behavioural characteristics to provide appropriate care and breed-specific advice.

Dogs
Learn to identify and understand dogs across the seven recognised breed groups (Hound, Gundog, Terrier, Utility, Working, Pastoral, Toy). You’ll explore the differences between purebreds, crossbreeds, mongrels, and the rising popularity of designer breeds. Key traits of each group are covered to help predict behaviour, exercise needs, and compatibility in social or family settings.

Cats
Examine major pedigree cat breeds, including British Shorthair, Persian, Maine Coon, Burmese, and Norwegian Forest Cats. Understand how differences in temperament, grooming needs, and health concerns affect care practices and suitability for different homes.

Rabbits
Gain insights into common rabbit breeds such as the Flemish Giant, Lionhead, French Lop, and New Zealand White. Learn how size, coat type, and temperament influence space, grooming, and interaction needs.

By the end of this course, you’ll be equipped with breed-specific knowledge to confidently support animal welfare, assist pet owners or customers, and tailor care to individual animals’ needs.
